An early morning call in a quiet Lutz, Florida neighborhood came dangerously close to turning into a deadly law enforcement encounter when three teenagers allegedly aimed realistic-looking BB guns at a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office helicopter.
according to Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office And according to local media reports, deputies responded to the area near East 148th Avenue at approximately 1:40 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, after a caller reported seeing three individuals walking through the neighborhood armed with what appeared to be rifles. Before ground units could reach the location, the agency’s aviation unit swooped in and located the group from the air.
Investigators said the situation escalated when three men pointed pointed rifles at the helicopter. From the flight crew’s perspective, there was no practical way to determine whether the weapons were genuine firearms or replicas. The suspects then entered a nearby residence while deputies surrounded the property and ordered them outside. Ultimately they surrendered without any further confrontation.
Authorities identified those arrested as 19-year-old Jartrell Hamilton, 15-year-old Javis Hamilton and 15-year-old Brayden Eason.
This phenomenon is more dangerous than it appears
Although investigators later determined that the weapons were BB guns, this was revealed only after the arrest.
From an operational standpoint, helicopter crews are trained to treat any object such as a rifle as a real lethal threat. At night, pilots often rely on infrared cameras, spotlights, and limited visual cues, making it nearly impossible to distinguish a BB gun from a real firearm. Any hesitation could put officers in real danger, while a miscalculation in the opposite direction could produce tragic consequences.
The encounter put everyone involved at risk. Officers on the ground had to approach a residence believing the occupants may have rifles capable of firing at deputies or the aircraft. Any sudden movement, refusal to comply, or perceived attempt to raise the weapon could have dramatically changed the outcome.
Serious allegations despite guns being BB weapons
Investigators later recovered the weapons and confirmed they were BB guns. Nevertheless, all three suspects were charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer. Under Florida law, objects that reasonably appear capable of causing lethal harm, or create a reasonable belief that they are real firearms, may still support serious felony charges in circumstances involving law enforcement officers.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said the agency has zero tolerance for anyone pointing a weapon at deputies, whether they are on the ground or in the air.
“If you aim what appears to be a rifle at one of our deputies or our aviation unit, expect our immediate response and be held fully accountable for your actions,” Chronister said.
As of mid-July, no additional developments or court decisions had been announced, and the criminal case remains in its early stages.
