Campbell River author Shari Green has been awarded the David Booth Children’s and Youth Poetry Award for her novel in verse, Song of Freedom, Song of Dreams.
In their statement, the jury said, “The evocative and taut free verse underscores the tension of living through a fraught political moment… This gripping tale sheds light on life in 1980s East Germany and speaks to the power of music, as well as to the importance of standing up for what is right and speaking out against what is not.”
Song of Freedom, Song of Dreams previously won the Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People and was a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award and the Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize
The David Booth award was one of six national children’s literature prizes presented at a gala event in Toronto on Oct. 26.
The awards are administered by the Canadian Children’s Book Centre.
