Cadillac recalls EV with rickety third-row seat that could trap a child

Cadillac has ordered dealers to stop selling the 2026 and 2027 Vistic three-row electric crossover due to a new recall campaign targeting its third-row seat. According to the manufacturer, the power-folding feature of the seat could entrap the rear seat occupant, creating a potentially dangerous situation.

“The third-row seatbacks in these vehicles can be ordered to power fold to the stored position by pressing and releasing the ‘down’ control button located in the cargo area or on the seat side pillar once,” the recall report from Cadillac states. “The seatback stops and does not automatically reverse if the seat hits an obstruction.”

“Small children may become trapped behind the seat back, increasing the risk of injury,” the report said.

According to GM’s report, the automaker became aware of the issue after Hyundai issued a similar recall and stop-sale order for the 2026 Palisade, which was blamed for the death of a two-year-old child in Ohio.

“On March 31, 2026, a GM engineer submitted a report through GM’s Speak Up for Safety (SUFS) program after reviewing the evaluation of the third-row power seatback folding function on the 2026 Cadillac VISTIQ,” the report said.

“GM made this assessment after a different automaker announced a recall in March 2026,” the report added. “(T)his recall is related to second- and third-row power seats in certain vehicles that have failed to respond appropriately to contact with a person or object during power-seat operation.”

GM says cars can be sold if the power-folding third-row seat feature is disabled before delivery. This will cause the seats to temporarily “freeze”, so customers are being consulted to determine what position they would prefer in the meantime.

Instructions to disable the third row of Vistic Has been distributed to dealers; Owners who already have Vistic at home will receive notices telling them to go to their service departments to disable the feature until new parts are installed.

Once parts are available, Cadillac will update all existing and future Vistics so that the third-row seat automatically returns to the previous position when an obstruction occurs. The earliest expected window for new parts is the week of August 3.
