Backstage Update: Former TNA Wrestling World Champion is leaving the company

Another former world champion is leaving the TNA Wrestling promotion.

Earlier this month, the promotion parted ways with three former TNA World Champions, Steve McLean, Sami Callihan and Tessa Blanchard. Now, the fourth wrestler who previously held the company’s top title belt is gone.

According to a report by Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com (h/t F4WOnline.com), Sunday’s Slammiversary pay-per-view was Mike Santana’s final match with TNA Wrestling, as his contract is set to expire in the coming days.

Johnson said Santana would not attend the TNA tapings in Albany, New York on Wednesday and Thursday.

Santana joined TNA Wrestling (then called “Impact Wrestling”) in 2017. After two years there, he joined AEW and spent the next five years there, eventually requesting and receiving his release.

Less than two months after being released from AEW, Santana returned to TNA Wrestling in April 2024. He emerged as one of the company’s premier main event stars, and won the TNA World Championship twice in a three-month period.

earlier this month, WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select It was reported that WWE was “interested” in Santana. The report states that WWE would like to bring Santana “to the main roster by the end of the year, if they land him.”

WWE also got a firsthand look at what Santana could bring to the table. In his second stint in TNA, Santana appeared regularly on NXT through the TNA-WWE partnership.
