Atletico Madrid have dealt a blow to the transfer ambitions of Arsenal and Barcelona, with CEO Miguel Ángel Gil clearly stating that Julian Alvarez will not leave the Metropolitano this summer – even if the offer reaches €200 million. The Argentine striker, who has been heavily linked with both the Premier League champions and the Catalan giants in recent weeks, is now at the center of a fierce tug-of-war that has raised tensions at the top of European football.
Álvarez’s future has been the subject of widespread speculation, with Arsenal reportedly one of his main suitors. Barcelona president Joan Laporta has openly acknowledged his club’s pursuit of the forward, and confirmed that a formal bid is still underway despite the strict deadline for approval. However, Atletico’s stance is nothing short of defiant.
In an interview with the club media, Miguel Ángel Gil left no room for negotiation, declaring: “My opinion is clear. The club’s desire is clear. We have made it clear to the player and his agent and the president of Barcelona. I have no doubt that Atlético is the right place in the world for Julián, and Julián is the perfect striker for Atlético de Madrid. We want to keep him.”
Gil further escalated the rhetoric by responding directly to Laporta’s recent comments. “I have heard some statements from the Barcelona president (Joan Laporta) saying that their offer was not unlimited. Our response is really unlimited: we do not want to move him. We have not accepted an offer of €100 million, nor will we accept one of €150 million or even €200 million.” This dire situation sends a sharp message across Europe: Alvarez is not for sale at any price.
The Atlético CEO did not stop from confirming the club’s position; He also made personal criticism of Laporta’s transfer strategy. “I know Joan well and recognize that she is constantly playing to the media and fans for her own personal circus. And I’m not angry. I have a good personal relationship with her. I spoke to her personally. I told her: ‘Please, let it go. We don’t want to sell her out and we’re not going to sell her out. Everything depends on the attitude of the player and also on his performances. In the end, Atlético Madrid knows what he wants. That is why I believe that the dream of every Atlético Madrid supporters, and my own, is to see Julián scoring goals and “I want to see Atlético Madrid win the trophy. I’m sure it will happen.”
