Why do we like this deal?

Asics updates its best running shoes about once a year, and that cycle usually means the outgoing version goes on sale. However, over the past few years, the brand has maintained a strong hold on online pricing, and we haven’t seen discounts exceeding 25%. But a new version of Gel-Cumulus hit the market earlier this year, and the previous model, surprisingly, showed up at about 40% off on Amazon ahead of the annual Prime Day sale.

Usually priced at $140, the Asics Gel-Cumulus 27 Running Shoes are now just $90 on Amazon in multiple colors, which is a 36% drop, and an even better deal than the one we initially reported on in February. Dozens of them are being purchased on the day, and we expect that number to increase significantly once the Prime Day sale goes live as this might be the highest priced running shoe on Amazon right now.

What shoppers need to know

  • Upper: Engineered mesh with reflective details
  • Midsole: FF Blast Plus foam paired with a PureGel insert at the heel
  • Outsole: fluidride outsole
  • Closing: lace up
  • Best for: neutral runner, extra supportive shoe, everyday runner

The Gel-Cumulus 27 is built on a FF Blast Plus midsole that absorbs impact without clumping, as well as a PureGel insert at the heel that gives some extra grip where most runners land first. The mesh upper uses a bit of the softer 26K weave for a more structured weave, which holds its shape better for longer periods of time, but gives up a little breathability in return. They’re outfitted with a FluidRide outsole for a comfortable ride with solid traction.

The Gel-Cumulus is Asics’ daily trainer for mostly neutral runners, and the 27S keeps that profile with a slightly roomy toe box that also works well for wide-footed runners. If you’re wearing 26s, most of the changes are to the upper (redesigned mesh, a thicker tongue, a new heel pull tab), but the midsole and heel insert are kept up and mostly unchanged.

Asics launched the Gel-Cumulus 28 with a lightweight foam setup earlier this year and that has also been receiving positive feedback.

what shoppers are saying

One helpful reviewer wrote, “Out of the box, they feel soft but supportive underfoot, and the gel technology really helps absorb impact for longer periods of time.” The same shopper also praised the versatility you get: “I’ve used them for daily training and long-distance running, and they’re comfortable the whole time.”

The extra cushioning in these running shoes makes them a popular choice for people with mobility issues or foot injuries. One shopper, who was seeing a podiatrist for her feet, wrote, “I’ve been wearing these for a few days, and now my feet have no pain at all.”

If you’re in the market for a pair of simple and effective running shoes that you can always rely on, the Asics Gel-Cumulus 27 is worth the $90 sale price. Just be sure to get a pair soon, as sizes are already running out.
