America’s best-selling vehicle is no longer a pickup truck

The Honda CR-V is now America’s best-selling vehicle in 2026. CR-V sales rose 19% in May and 30% in June, leaving a huge 26,000-unit gap over the next best-seller, Ford’s F-150, and about a 75,000-unit gap over the next best-selling car, Toyota’s RAV4. At the time of publication, the Honda CR-V sold 226,114 units at midyear.

To some extent, the CR-V’s success comes from the F-150’s production problems. A fire at an aluminum supplier’s plant has disrupted F-150 supply to such an extent that Ford has not been able to meet demand, despite being the industry’s top seller for 15 of the last 16 years.

The fire caused a brief shutdown of the plant, while Ford was forced to prioritize the aluminum it had in its best-selling trims of the F-150. Ford has made approximately 17,000 fewer trucks this time compared to last year. So far this year, 209,311 units of F-150 have been sold.

Toyota’s RAV4 stuttering can be attributed to the latest generation of the model. There’s always a slight difference in sales between outgoing and incoming models, and the latest RAV4 was no different. Toyota says it has sold 153,995 RAV4s so far this year.

The RAV4 is easily the CR-V’s biggest competitor, with both targeting the affordable family crossover segment. Both crossovers have seen sales of hybrid trims rise in recent months. Gas prices have skyrocketed since the war with Iran began, and buyers have shown they don’t want to waste money at the pump in their purchases. Hybrid trims of the CR-V are on the rise, contributing 55% of the SUV’s Q1 and Q2 sales, up significantly from last year.
