Last week, I attended GunCon. In industrial events, it stands out as the best. I have a close relationship with TGC’s John Patton and Cody Hinton, who host and organize the event, but this is an objective opinion: If you’re a firearms enthusiast, you really should be there. People travel far and wide to attend. Whether you’re there to see your favorite brand, discover a new one, attend a panel, or meet your favorite Gunfluencers, GunCon is the right place for you. It has also become a hub for new and interesting products from established brands and startups. What I love about GunCon is it highlights the next big rising artist. One is Akos Arms. Young though they may be, they brought my favorite gun to GunCon baja pistol.
A modern take on a cool classic
The Baja pistol from Akos Arms draws inspiration from some of the most recognizable firearm designs of the last century while delivering a uniquely modern package. Chambered in .45 ACP, the straight-pull bolt-action pistol was designed for quiet shooting and low recoil, influenced by the famous De Lisle carbine, the Swiss K31, and the AR-15.
Founded in 2021 by Matthew Heard, Akos Arms developed the Baja as its first firearm design, blending historical concepts with the accessory compatibility today’s shooters expect. Made in Pennsylvania, the pistol utilizes a unique straight-pull bolt system that enables faster operation than traditional turn-bolt designs while maintaining the simplicity of a manually operated action (but if you’re like me, you can fire it a lot faster!).
Built around versatility
The Baja features an 8.5-inch alloy-steel barrel threaded in .578″-28, making it compatible with a wide range of muzzle devices, including suppressors, flash hiders, and muzzle brakes. The pistol is rated for SAAMI-spec +P ammunition and is chambered from commonly available Glock-pattern full-size magazines.
A full-length Picatinny rail provides ample space for optics, while the 7-inch free-float M-LOK handguard provides attachment space on seven sides for accessories. Additional features include CNC-milled billet aluminum upper and lower receivers, a standard nickel Teflon-coated match-grade single-stage trigger with an optional nickel boron-coated two-stage upgrade, a replaceable bolt knob, and an SB Tactical SBA5 six-position adjustable brace. Weighing only 4 pounds, 10 ounces and measuring 24 inches overall, the Baja is designed to be compact, adaptable, and easy to customize.
zoom out
Priced between $1,779 and $1,859, the Baja pistol represents Akos Arms’ attempt to re-imagine a historically inspired concept for today’s shooting enthusiasts. And man, am I a fan? Not only was it one of the quietest firearms on the line, but it was also undoubtedly the most fun. The .45 ACP was an excellent choice because it is naturally subsonic, making it the ultimate suppressor host. I have heard that a 9mm version will be available in the future. I really hope Akos takes over the market. Matthew Hurd seems genuine and honest in his actions. This is like a dream come true for them. Let’s keep that dream alive.
