Lost Interest in Sex After Starting Birth Control Pill? Causes, Tips and When to See a Doctor

Many women start birth control with one worry: “Will it change how I feel in bed?” Online forums are full of stories about low desire after starting the pill. Others say sex became easier and more enjoyable. So what is the truth? Can hormonal birth control affect your sex drive? It can, but for most women it does not.

A smaller group feel a drop, and some feel an increase. The effect depends on you, the type of method and what else is happening in your life. Here is what a gynaecologist and recent research say.

Can Hormonal Birth Control Affect Your Sex Drive?

Dr Lavanya Kiran, Director and Lead Consultant, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, KIMS Hospitals, Electronic City, Bengaluru says, “It can, but it does not for most women. Research shows that the majority of pill users notice no real change in desire. A smaller group feel a drop, and some feel an increase.”

How Does the Pill Affect Sex Drive? What Happens Inside the Body

“Think of it as a chain of three small steps,” says Dr Kiran. The pill quiets the ovaries. They make less of their own hormones, including a small amount of testosterone. Women need testosterone too, and it plays a part in desire.

The liver mops up testosterone. The oestrogen in the pill makes the liver produce more of a protein called SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin). SHBG acts like a sponge. So the “free” testosterone, the part that can do its job, falls.pill affect your sex drive

Less free testosterone can mean less desire, and sometimes dryness. Vaginal tissues rely on these hormones to stay moist.

A 2024 review in Sexual Medicine Reviewsfound that although combined pills lower free testosterone, “it is unclear” whether they affect sexual function, including desire. It said antiandrogenic pills, which block male-type hormones, seem to have a negative effect on arousal, lubrication and orgasm. The authors said a lack of placebo-controlled trials limits firm conclusions.

Why Do Many Women Notice No Change, or Even an Increase?

Dr Kiran says, “Many women show a clear drop in free testosterone, yet report no loss of sexual interest. Desire depends on much more than one hormone.”birth control pill affect your sex drive

  • Removing the fear of pregnancy can make sex more relaxed.
  • Pills can ease painful periods, heavy bleeding and acne, which improves body image.
  • Women whose desire was low due to pain or PMS may feel better.

Does the Type of Contraception Matter?

Dr Kiran says, “Effects vary.” A2023 review in Gazeta Médicacovered 45 papers. Its authors wrote that “contraceptives can affect libido.” The findings by method:

  • Hormonal IUD, vaginal ring and patch: mainly positive or neutral
  • Combined pills and implant: mixed
  • Progestin-only pill and injection: mainly negative
  • Copper IUD: no impact

Dr Kiran adds that hormonal IUDs mostly keep the hormone in the womb, so body-wide effects are usually small. Copper IUDs and condoms do not use hormones.

What Else Can Lower Sex Drive, Apart From the Pill?

“It is easy to blame the pill when the real cause is one of these,” says Dr Kiran.

  • Stress, tiredness and poor sleep
  • Relationship problems
  • Painful sex or vaginal dryness
  • Depression, anxiety or antidepressants
  • Thyroid problems or low iron
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding and perimenopause
  • Alcohol, smoking and some medicines
  • Body image worries
  • Diabetes or PCOS

  • Women on a very low-dose oestrogen pill
  • Women with low desire, depression or anxiety already
  • Women who started the pill during a stressful time
  • Women who notice dryness or mood changes
  • New starters. “The first few months are an adjustment period,” says Dr Kiran.

What Can You Do If You Think Your Contraception Is Affecting Your Sex Drive?

Dr Kiran advises, “Give it time. Some side effects settle within about three months.”

  • Note when changes began, and compare it to when you started or switched.
  • Do not stop suddenly. You risk an unplanned pregnancy. Use condoms as back-up.
  • Talk to your gynaecologist about a different formula, method or a non-hormonal option.
  • Use a water-based lubricant for dryness.
  • Look at sleep, stress and relationships too.
  • Talk to your partner. It reduces pressure.

Is the Effect Permanent?

“No,” says Dr Kiran. In most women, desire returns to its earlier level after stopping or changing the method. This may take a few weeks to a few months.

When to See a Doctor About Low Sex Drive on Birth Control

Dr Kiran advises seeing a doctor if you have:

  • A sudden or major drop after starting or switching
  • A change lasting beyond about three months
  • Pain during sex, or marked dryness
  • Low mood, anxiety or irritability that affects daily life
  • Distress for you or your relationship
  • Irregular bleeding, tiredness or weight changes

Dr Kiran says, “For most women, hormonal birth control does not change sex drive. A minority notice a drop.” If you are bothered, do not stop abruptly. Talk to your gynaecologist, who can adjust the method.

  • 1. Can the Pill Affect Arousal and Orgasm, Not Just Desire?

It may in some women, mainly with antiandrogenic pills, according to a 2024 review. But evidence is limited. If this happens, talk to your doctor. A different pill or method may help.

  • 2. Is Low Sex Drive in Your 40s Caused by the Pill or Perimenopause?

It can be either, or neither. Libido loss is common in the late 40s. It is influenced by work stress, tiredness, self-image and medicines, not hormones alone. See a doctor to find the cause.
