Godfather of AI Geoffrey Hinton
Godfather of AI Geoffrey Hinton believes tech giant Google has a strong chance of winning the AI race, while Microsoft and Meta may be less likely to emerge as leaders. However, Hinton also acknowledged that his past association with Google could influence his view. “If I had to bet on one lot of people, it would probably be Google,” Geoffrey Hinton said while sharing his views on which companies could lead the AI race. “But I used to work for Google, so don’t take me too seriously about that. I have a vested interest in them winning,” he further added.Hinton, who is widely known as the ‘Godfather of AI’ for his pioneering work in the field, also named Anthropic and OpenAI as companies that could challenge Google.

Geoffrey Hinton says Microsoft and Meta are less likely to win AI race

While Geoffrey Hinton sees Google as a likely contender, he believes Microsoft and Meta have a lower chance of winning the AI race.”Anthropic might win. OpenAI might win,” he said. “I think it’s less likely that Microsoft will win or that Facebook will win,” Hinton added.Geoffrey Hinton also explained that the outcome may depend less on who leads a company and more on its ability to attract talented people and provide them with the resources needed to develop AI.”It’s not who’s running it, it’s who has the resources to get the right people to do the work.”

Why Geoffrey Hinton favours Google

Geoffrey Hinton’s comments come with an important qualification. He previously worked at Google, where he spent more than a decade researching artificial intelligence before leaving the company in 2023. He spent about 10 years working on artificial neural networks and deep learning technologies for Google. In 2012, his work (alongside his students) on AlexNet laid the technical foundation for modern generative AI and large language models. After leaving Google, Hinton was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for his foundational discoveries and inventions in machine learning with artificial neural networks.
