My fascination with beauty began long before I understood it could become a career. As a little girl, I would sit on the couch doing my mother’s makeup, studying her face with the seriousness of someone who had been given an important assignment. By my teenage years, I was recording imaginary beauty tutorials in my bedroom, practicing makeup techniques and dreaming of sharing everything I was learning with an audience.
From Makeup Artistry to Medical Aesthetics: My Next Chapter in the Hudson Valley Beauty Scene — By Mkayla Pierre, BSN, RN, LE — Contributing Editor, Beauty & Wellness, Hudson Valley Style Magazine — Photography by Maxwell Alexander — Presented by Aláry Health Spa
Today, that dream has taken a wonderfully unexpected direction. I’m joining Hudson Valley Style Magazine as a Contributing Editor covering Beauty, Wellness, and Medical Aesthetics, bringing my perspective as a makeup artist, registered nurse, licensed esthetician, and Lead Aesthetic Injector at Aláry Health Spa in Poughkeepsie, New York.
My tools have evolved over the years, from makeup brushes to the precision instruments used in aesthetic medicine, but my fascination with the human face has remained remarkably consistent. I still love the artistry of beauty. I simply have a much deeper appreciation for the science behind it.
A Lifelong Love Affair with Beauty
Before entering nursing, I worked professionally in the beauty industry, helping people discover makeup techniques and skincare approaches that complemented their individual features. I loved the creative process, especially the subtle decisions involving color, proportion, and the way makeup could change someone’s perception of their appearance.
Becoming a licensed esthetician gave that creative interest a new foundation in skin health. Nursing eventually opened another dimension of care, one that required me to understand the human body and the responsibility that comes with earning a patient’s trust.
I’ve always viewed makeup artistry as a form of painting, with the face as a living canvas. Medical aesthetics offers another creative perspective, although the work requires a very different level of clinical judgment. The techniques may have changed, but my appreciation for individuality has only grown.
The New Conversation Around Injectables
At Aláry Health Spa, where I serve as Lead Aesthetic Injector, I’m excited to bring those experiences together in a setting that values thoughtful, individualized care.
Medical aesthetics has become an important part of contemporary beauty culture, especially as conversations around natural-looking results and subtle facial enhancements continue to evolve. Patients are exploring lip fillers and facial balancing, while treatments such as neurotoxins and wrinkle relaxers have become familiar topics in beauty discussions.
I find the relationship between artistry and anatomy especially compelling. Understanding someone’s facial structure is essential, but so is understanding their expectations. A successful consultation begins with listening, offering clear information, and developing realistic goals together.
For anyone searching for the best med spa in the Hudson Valley, my advice is to look beyond beautiful photographs and social media trends. Choose qualified medical professionals who prioritize safety, explain treatment options carefully, and respect your decisions. Feeling comfortable with your provider should be every bit as important as the treatment itself.
Beauty, Confidence, and the Person Behind the Reflection
My experience in psychiatric nursing has shaped how I think about beauty in ways I never anticipated. Working closely with patients has deepened my understanding of how people experience confidence and how personal identity influences the way we see ourselves.
I believe aesthetic treatments can be one expression of self-care, but they should never become a measure of someone’s worth. The most meaningful beauty conversations acknowledge the person behind the reflection, including the emotions and expectations they bring into the room.
That perspective also informs my approach to motherhood. As a busy mom balancing nursing, continued education, and a growing career in medical aesthetics, I’ve learned to appreciate the importance of making time for ourselves. I understand how difficult that can feel when life is moving at full speed.
I hope to encourage other women, especially mothers pursuing their own ambitions, to continue exploring what makes them feel fulfilled. Motherhood has given my dreams a deeper sense of purpose, and I want my son to grow up knowing that curiosity and determination can open unexpected doors.
A Fresh Perspective on Hudson Valley Beauty & Wellness
Joining the Hudson Valley Style Magazine editorial team feels like a natural extension of the beauty conversations I’ve loved since childhood. That teenager recording makeup tutorials in her bedroom would be thrilled to know she finally has a real audience.
Through my contributions to HVSM’s Beauty and Wellness sections, I look forward to exploring modern beauty with the curiosity of an artist and the perspective of a healthcare professional. We’ll examine emerging skincare trends, the evolving world of injectable aesthetics, and the science behind treatments attracting attention in the Hudson Valley and beyond. I’ll also be stepping in front of the camera to review the latest makeup and skincare launches, beauty essentials, and wellness supplements, with a thoughtful eye for ingredients, product claims, and what deserves a place in a real-life routine.
I’m especially eager to make beauty education more approachable. Whether we’re discussing the difference between lip fillers and lip flips, exploring PRP treatments, or considering what natural-looking facial rejuvenation means, my goal is to offer practical information that helps readers make confident, informed choices.
And because beauty should also be enjoyable, I hope to bring a little personality to the conversation. I still get excited about discovering a great makeup technique, and I appreciate a good beauty trend as much as anyone.
I’m looking forward to sharing what I’ve learned, continuing to learn from the people I meet, and celebrating the many ways we define beauty for ourselves.
