Jorge Martín follows strict recovery plan to attempt race return at Sepang despite fractured radius

Jorge Martín Faces Herculean Challenge to Race at Sepang Following Fractured Radius

Jorge Martín’s fierce title battle with Marc Márquez in the 2024 MotoGP season has taken a dramatic and painful turn after a severe crash during the sprint race at the Australian Grand Prix. Locked in an intense duel with reigning champion Márquez, Martín suffered a fracture to the radius near his wrist during a high-impact fall at Phillip Island’s Turn 8. The injury immediately cast doubt over his championship aspirations, but a series of developments have kept his hopes alive ahead of the Malaysian GP at Sepang.

Initial fears of a double fracture, which included potential damage to the ulna, were dispelled after a CT scan performed in Melbourne revealed no displacement in the radius fracture. This was a crucial finding because any displacement would have mandated immediate surgery back in Spain, effectively ending Martín’s title challenge prematurely. The cancellation of the Australian GP’s main race due to adverse weather conditions also prevented Márquez from extending his championship lead beyond ten points, with Marco Bezzecchi sitting 50 points behind in third.

With the clock ticking, Martín and his team have launched an aggressive rehabilitation plan designed by physiotherapist Aitor Tomás, who travels with both Martín and Pedro Acosta for their race weekends. Martín flew to Kuala Lumpur immediately after the crash, where a trusted local physiotherapist is already implementing Tomás’ recovery protocols. Tomás detailed the two-phase approach: “First, we focus on reducing inflammation and recovering mobility, strength, and functionality using cryotherapy and massage. Then, we switch to bone regeneration with magnetotherapy to strengthen the radius.”

If Martín is cleared to ride, the rehabilitation

If Martín is cleared to ride, the rehabilitation will shift to managing wrist inflammation and pain control tailored specifically for the demands of MotoGP racing. Tomás emphasized the cautious approach, stating that decisions on painkiller infiltrations will depend on Martín’s feedback after each session on the RS-GP. To support the injured area, Martín’s wrist will be taped securely, and Alpinestars has customized his right glove to prevent discomfort around the fracture site.

Despite the urgency, Martín’s camp remains grounded in realism given the fracture’s precarious location. The right wrist endures immense stress on the bike, controlling throttle, front brake lever, and body positioning during acceleration and braking. The punishing heat and humidity of Sepang further complicate recovery. Aprilia’s official stance echoes this caution: “We’ll take it day by day and support Jorge fully, but these situations are incredibly complex. There is no pressure from us—his health comes first, and whatever he decides will be the right call.”

As the title fight narrows to its final rounds, Martín’s determination to race in Malaysia epitomizes the high stakes and brutal physical demands of MotoGP. The upcoming fitness evaluation on Thursday by the championship’s medical team, led by Dr. Ángel Charte, will be decisive in whether the Madrid-born rider can continue his pursuit of a second premier-class crown. Jorge Martín’s resolve and the meticulous recovery plan now stand as the last pillars in a battle that tests both his body and his ambition.
