Ducati Team Manager Davide Tardozzi has publicly defended Marc Márquez following widespread criticism over the MotoGP season opener in Qatar, which remains scheduled despite ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts. Speaking to Sky Sports, Tardozzi addressed the mounting tensions surrounding the race’s
Tardozzi highlighted the unique position of Márquez as the sole rider outspoken enough to address safety concerns directly with event organisers. “Marc is the most charismatic person, so many riders outside express opinions even stronger than his,” Tardozzi explained. “But when it comes to meetings with the organisers, they stay silent. The Ducati chief criticised the double standards applied to Márquez, who has called for contingency plans such as evacuation protocols and guarantees for rider safety rather than outright boycotting the event. “He has been smart enough to say: ‘Let’s try to mediate, propose solutions that ensure evacuation, plan B, and all conditions to race safely,’” Tardozzi continued. “Others have said worse things but lacked the courage to repeat them in front of the organisers. That frustrates me.”
Tardozzi refuted claims that Márquez was the driving force opposing the Qatar Grand Prix. “He hasn’t said ‘I don’t want to go.’ He simply asked, like many others, for organisational safety measures. Yet, he is blamed entirely, as if he alone refuses to race there,” Tardozzi insisted. “There are situations that suggest not going might be better, but once safety conditions and evacuation plans are in place, we will go.”
Underlining the contractual dynamics within MotoGP, Tardozzi reminded that teams hold formal agreements with event organisers, while riders are employees of those teams. “The organiser, beyond hearing riders’ opinions, obviously maintains relations with the team,” he stated. “When decisions are made, the organiser must consult with the teams.”
