The 132d Wing’s 133d Combat Training Squadron in Des Moines, Iowa recently purchased two LED pacing systems to help make HAMR testing more consistent and easier to execute.

The goal of the purchase was to improve existing processes and make requirements easier to execute. In the past Airmen have run solely with an audio cue for assistance, but with this device there will be a visual cue as well.

“It was a relatively simple innovation that addressed a real need,” said Chief Master Sgt. Crystal Jordan, senior enlisted leader of the 133d Combat Training Squadron. “Members already have completed the HAMR, so the question became: how can we give them a better tool to train for it and execute it consistently? After seeing what the system could provide, we felt it would be a valuable addition for both individual preparation and Wing fitness testing.”

The LED pacing system is an LED strip and control box programmed to help facilitate the Air Force HAMR. An Airman runs alongside the LED strip light, showing the pace in addition to HAMR audio cues. It does not change how the HAMR is scored but provides an additional visual tool to help members maintain the required timing. The first impressions of the device have been positive.

“So far, 12 members have used the system during their official fitness assessment and all 12 passed. 11 of the 12 members said they liked using the system and plan to use it again for future HAMR assessments,” said Jordan. “The early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly because the visual pacing gives members another way to gauge their speed throughout the test.”

Of the two systems purchased, one will remain with the 133d Combat Training Squadron while the second will be managed through the 132d Force Support Squadron. This system will be a wing-wide re utilize the equipment for HAMR testing across their organizations
