Sébastien Ogier is set to reunite with legendary co-driver Julian Ingrassia for the upcoming World Rally Championship round in Finland, marking a dramatic and emotional return to the cockpit duo that have dominated the sport for years. The unexpected reunion came when Vincent Landais, Ogier’s regular co-driver since Rally Japan 2022, stepped down for personal reasons, forcing Ogier to call on his former teammate to take over the key role.
Ingrassia, who retired from top-tier WRC competition at the end of 2021 after securing an unprecedented eighth world title with Ogier with Toyota, will make his competitive return at Rally Finland. Their last win together was at the 2021 Rally Monza, a win that sealed their eighth world championship. Ogier shared his thoughts in a social media video, saying, “Here we are in Finland, unfortunately not with Vincent for personal reasons. He won’t be able to rally this week, so I’m delighted that my old friend Julien has accepted to take the seat back and will be my co-driver for this week. I’m looking forward to rekindling this relationship.”
Since retiring, Ingrassia has remained embedded within the WRC community, taking up a television role with the WRC and French broadcaster Canal+. Beyond broadcasting, he was instrumental in founding last year the World Rally Drivers’ Alliance (WORDA), an association equivalent to Formula 1’s Grand Prix Drivers’ Association. The initiative was significant for the rally drivers, who successfully challenged the FIA’s regulation on fines for profanity during interviews at the end of the stage, highlighting Ingrassia’s ongoing influence on the sport outside of the stage.
Ingrassia himself acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying, “Being here in Finland will definitely be a challenge for me, but I’m really happy to join Seb and help Vincent and the team. I’ll see you in the steps.” His presence brings a boost of experience and familiarity to Ogier’s campaign as the pair tackle one of the WRC’s most demanding events.
Currently fourth in the championship standings, Ogier trails leader Elfyn Evans by 38 points in Rally Finland, making this reunion not only an emotional return but a strategic move in an extremely competitive title race. The chemistry between Ogier and Ingrassia, proven at eight World Championships, could prove decisive as they bid to get back into the fray for this season’s championship battle.
