Aston Martin F1 signals revival with major upgrade surge at Hungarian GP
After a torturous first ten rounds plagued by uncompetitive pace and technical problems, Aston Martin F1 has finally made the breakthrough. Led by the arrival of renowned aerodynamicist Adrian Newey, the Silverstone-based team unveiled a comprehensive upgrade package at the Hungarian Grand Prix that breathed new life into their struggling 2026 challenger.
Owned by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, Aston Martin suffered an inglorious start to the season, often finishing at the back of the grid and unable to match the performance of newcomer Cadillac. Newey’s first project as Aston Martin’s chief technical officer – a complete chassis redesign to conform to the new regulations – initially proved weak, further hampered by an unreliable Honda power unit. Testing exposed the car’s obvious shortcomings, casting doubt on the team’s competitiveness for the entire campaign.
However, the situation changed dramatically at the Hungaroring. Aston Martin introduced a staggering 16 upgrades, focusing primarily on the chassis, representing a clear directional change. Their efforts bore fruit as two-time world champion Fernando Alonso led the team past Q1 in qualifying for the first time this year, securing the 16th-place grid slot for Sunday’s 70-lap race. This provided a significant morale boost for the Silverstone organisation, signaling solid progress after months of disappointment.
During the pre-race gridwalk, Sky F1’s Martin Brundle handed the microphone to team owner Lawrence Stroll, who delivered an emphatic message acknowledging the milestone. “Yeah, obviously we’ve taken a huge step forward, one of many steps to come. So yeah, very satisfied,” Stroll said, highlighting the significance of this development after a rocky start. He paid tribute to the tireless dedication of Aston Martin’s workers: “Thank you to the hard work of all the boys and girls at the factory for making this possible. This is a good start.”
Stroll’s comments underline the team’s commitment to continued improvement as they aim to climb up the grid in the second half of the season. The Hungarian GP upgrade represents an important foundation for future growth, reinforcing confidence in Newi’s technical leadership.
