Charles Leclerc disappointed with last lap after fifth place in Belgian GP qualifying

Charles Leclerc finished fifth in qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix, but the Ferrari driver openly admitted his frustration when yellow flags hampered his final effort. The Monegasque star was aiming for a strong result, confident that his SF-24 was more than capable of performing on the unique Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

Leclerc managed to overtake his teammate Lewis Hamilton, giving Ferrari a top five finish – a target the team had set given the technical demands of the iconic Belgian track. However, post-session penalties for several competitors relegated Leclerc to fourth on the starting grid, a small consolation after what he described as an unsatisfactory end to qualifying.

Speaking candidly after getting out of the car, Leclerc reflected on Ferrari’s weekend: “It’s very much in line with what we expected at Silverstone and here. Silverstone was a bit different, but this weekend everything is working as we hoped.” Yet, his attention immediately turned to the yellow flag incident that derailed his final effort. “I’m a little disappointed with that last lap because there was a yellow flag that should have been there for the pit entry, but in my opinion, it was too visible on the track. It was right in the middle. It probably cost me a place; I couldn’t have made a better lap time – there was still a half-second gap to Antonelli on pole – but it was possible to gain another position.”

Leclerc’s frustration was not just with the track conditions, but with Ferrari suffering a severe power shortage against its main rivals. When asked about the difference to Mercedes, Leclerc said candidly: “It’s just pure power. In terms of engine performance, they are simply on another level. We are quite strong on low-grip circuits, but we struggle on power-demanding tracks. Yet, today they were also very strong in the corners. Right now, they have a very strong package and as far as we are concerned, we just have to concentrate on maximizing what we have in these types of circuits.”

The Ferrari driver’s comments underline the technical and strategic challenges facing the Scuderia in the ongoing battle with Mercedes and the other front-runners. As teams prepare for race day, Leclerc’s determination to extract every ounce of performance from his car will be central to Ferrari’s ambitions at Spa-Francorchamps.
