Streetfighter that defies expectations

Streetfighter that defies expectations

Today, motorcycles are the most diverse we have ever had. From radar-based technology to practical Ducati sports bikes available for under $11,000, the world of 2026 motorcycles is full of surprises. This has helped highlight a handful of motorcycles that live up to expectations by outperforming their categories in engine size, price point, technology suites and even age. Here, we draw your attention to the 27-year-old Suzuki Formula that remains a unique streetfighter in its segment. It’s compact, sophisticated, reliable and gives off a charming Italian aura for under $10,000.

Suzuki is the leader in making underdog motorcycles

Suzuki A unique choice among the big four Japanese motorcycle brands. While others are busy deploying the latest and greatest technology and features on their new motorcycles, Suzuki focuses on refinement. Take the mighty Hayabusa, for example. This is Suzuki’s halo sports bike, and while talks of a new third-generation model were in full swing in 2020, fans were curious what the next Busa would be like.

Speculation ranged from supercharged or turbocharged engines to active aerodynamics. But what did we get? A more subdued but calculated overhaul that focuses on improving the electronics, engine, ergonomics and weight distribution. This mentality is both a boon and a curse for Suzuki as it only caters to a particular section of buyers whose primary need is stress-free ownership.

Like the Hayabusa, the V-Strom lineup and GSX series are long-term investments that have refined themselves over the years to achieve class-leading reliability. However, this formula also makes Suzuki motorcycles look “boring”. The latest generation GSX-R1000 is a prime example of Suzuki being lazy when it comes to updates. Despite the shortcomings, there is no denying the fact that Suzuki makes some of the most underrated bikes today.

Many Suzukis keep dashing expectations

The Suzuki sport-touring duo GSX-S1000GT+ and GSX-S1000GX+ are explosive motorcycles powered by the last-generation GSX-R1000 engine. The underpinnings are designed for thrills without compromising practicality, and their pricing is aggressive, especially considering their stacked feature list. The aforementioned Suzuki Hayabusa despite being a “practical” superbike doesn’t live up to expectations by scaring away most riders with its top-notch performance. Then there is the mighty Suzuki Boulevard M109R.

This 20-year-old muscle cruiser was way ahead of its time at launch, and in 2026 it still puts modern rivals from Harley-Davidson and Indian to shame. Oh, and it’s the most powerful cruiser bike under $20,000. However, there is one specific Suzuki motorcycle that has been quietly blowing away expectations for quite some time now. The Suzuki SV650 is a good-looking streetfighter with a unique blend of style, performance, refinement, reliability and fun-riding appeal.

The secret to the Suzuki SV650’s longevity is its stability. Believe it or not, this streetfighter still rides on a 27-year-old platform. There have been subtle technical and visual updates over the years, but the basic formula and style still holds true to the OG. Twenty-seven years of refinement and heritage have kept the SV650 relevant and one of the most reliable streetfighters today.

Although it plays it safe with minimal technical intervention, the SV650 is not devoid of drama, thanks to its Italian-esque design and fun-riding dynamics. There is no rocket science. Suzuki stuck to a simple formula that has helped the SV650 still live up to expectations. Furthermore, due to its aggressive pricing, no other streetfighter can match the overall appeal of this Suzuki.

A timeless design with strong Ducati Monster vibes

The Suzuki SV650 is a simple-looking Japanese neo-retro streetfighter, thanks to its open trellis frame design. There’s no denying that it takes a lot of inspiration from the OG Ducati Monster. The proportions are perfect, and the gorgeous curves complement its muscular stance. This Suzuki design shows us how a simple formula can become timeless and desirable.

Its five-spoke alloy wheels are painted in the same shade as the trellis frame, which adds a nice contrast to the entire motorcycle. Furthermore, its twin-cylinder engine is fitted as a trophy and is an integral part of the design. The SV650 features a broad single seat for two, a bulbous fuel tank design and a retro front facia with a good old circular headlamp assembly. The rear is clean and minimalist, with a sweeping tail streamline and exhaust vents.

Complemented with concise and entertaining dimensions

The SV650 is compact enough to be an everyday motorcycle. Its wheelbase is less than 57 inches, it is 84.3 inches long and about 30 inches wider. Seat height is quite accessible at 30.9 inches, and 5.3 inches of ground clearance helps keep things on the ground. Combine these with the low curb weight of 437 pounds, and the SV650 turns into a swift streetfighter. The rider triangle is quite comfortable, with the rider leaning slightly forward while the footpegs are directly beneath the rider.

Powered by the only V-twin engine in its segment

The SV650 is powered by a very refined and evergreen 645 cc V-twin engine. This engine is so good that it’s been refreshed as the powerplant for the all-new 2026 Suzuki SV-7GX crossover. On the SV650, this mill is tuned for low- and mid-range torque. It produces 75 horsepower and 47 pound-feet of torque, with most of the torque available below 3,000 rpm. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. The SV650 has a relatively high rev limit, which helps with spirited runs.

The trellis frame, apart from being the main visual feature, also helps enhance the fun yet stable riding dynamics of the SV650. The steel construction balances stiffness and lightweight appeal, making the SV650 a fun-riding machine. The chassis is suspended on 41 mm telescopic front forks with 4.9 inches of travel and a seven-stage preload-adjustable rear monoshock with 5.1 inches of travel.

Braking duties consist of twin fully floating 290 mm discs at the front with Tokico four-piston calipers. The rear gets a 240 mm disc with a single-piston calliper. Its grip duties are handled by 120-section front and 160-section rear tubeless tires wrapped around lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels.

Its nearest competitor is a new Honda

While there’s no real V-twin rival to the Suzuki SV650 for under $10,000, the new 2026 Honda CB750 Hornet e-Clutch comes close to challenging its well-meaning appeal. The more modern Honda is faster, has a larger parallel-twin engine with a 270-degree firing order, and has a smoother-riding e-clutch system. The technology suite is also packed with TFT screen, ride modes, throttle-by-wire and Honda RoadSync smartphone connectivity.

Compared to the Hornet, the SV650 is a relic with a smaller LCD. Its most notable technology is standard ABS. But still, if we strip away the spec sheet, the Honda CB750, despite its cheaper price of $7,999, doesn’t match the exotic charisma and stress-free maintenance appeal of the more experienced Suzuki SV650. And that’s why this streetfighter from Suzuki continues to live up to expectations, even against much stronger rivals.
