Lewis Hamilton has raised serious concerns about the new Madrid circuit set to host the Spanish Grand Prix in September, putting the much-anticipated Formula 1 debut at the venue in jeopardy. The seven-time world champion made a pointed criticism after the Ferrari filming day at the track, specifically targeting the structural design of the circuit and the extreme compression forces expected to challenge the drivers.
Hamilton’s main fears centered on the high-speed “La Monumental” corner, where drivers had to endure the penalty of four Gs of compression for two seconds at 250 km/h. The Mercedes star questioned the wisdom of such aggressive track design choices, stressing the discomfort and physical harm these forces would cause to competitors. Speaking candidly after Ferrari’s special track session, Hamilton made no bones about the potential dangers and inconveniences associated with the new layout.
While Hamilton sounded the alarm, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc offered a contrary view. The Monegasque driver described the Madrid circuit as a venue with the potential for a “tremendous qualifying session”, indicating optimism about the track’s promise for wheel-to-wheel action and dramatic time attacks. This split in driver opinion has further intensified the spotlight on the Madrid GP debut.
Controversy broke out in the paddock following Ferrari’s testing, as rival teams questioned the Italian team’s potential competitive edge by running on a yet-to-be raced layout. The session has sparked debate about fairness and regulatory gray areas around private filming days at new circuits, raising the stakes ahead of the race weekend.
The Madrid circuit has also faced local resistance, with Barcelona’s city council protesting and citing a lack of enthusiasm from many drivers. These growing criticisms place additional pressure on event organisers, who are now tasked with proving the safety, excitement and feasibility of the new venue as it prepares for the World Championships debut.
With the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid approaching, Hamilton’s outspoken comments and the ongoing controversy have ensured the spotlight will remain firmly on the circuit’s preparations and the challenges awaiting Formula 1’s elite.
