This is Patrick Mahomes' T&T Wedding Watch

What watch will you wear to your friend’s wedding when your friend is marrying not only Kansas City Chiefs Travis Kelce but also pop super-mega star Taylor Swift?

As for Patrick Mahomes, who wore a midnight blue tux to Kelce’s wedding to Taylor Swift on July 3, his choice was unconventional. As a Hublot ambassador, one might have expected him to slap on a skinny guy Classic Fusionor maybe even a smooth one big bang. But he sprung to do something completely out of left field with the MP-10 Tourbillon Wet Energy System All Black – a watch that looks more like some kind of weird fusion reactor in the center of the starship Enterprise than a wristwatch.

Instead of being housed in a round or rectangular case, the MP-10 is housed in a transparent, tonneau-shaped case made of microblasted black ceramic and polished sapphire with anti-reflective treatment. There’s nothing regular about this watch, including the way it reads the time. Scanned from top to bottom, it has four continuously rotating displays that show the hours, minutes, power reserve in green and red, and seconds marked directly on a minute tourbillon inclined at 35 degrees. Set off the back of the case, its 592-component Hublot cal. The HUB9013 movement is automatically wound via two weights that flank the time display and offer a 48-hour power reserve.

Such a design is emblematic of Hublot’s Exceptional Timepieces collection, which includes everything from the MP-11 with a 14-day power reserve to the MP-13 Tourbillon with a bi-axis retrograde display to the flower-shaped MP-15 designed in collaboration with Takashi Murakami. But while many of these models—as innovative as they are—are instantly recognizable as wristwatches, the MP-10 is something else entirely. Certainly, someone accustomed to MB&F’s whimsical designs or L’Epée’s quirky watches might not even blink at the automotive aesthetics of its piston engine-looking architecture. But for those not familiar with Haute Horlogerie GPHG submissions, it makes a great first impression.

Given its bulk and the business of its design, the MP-10 Tourbillon Wet Energie System All Black is certainly not traditional dress watch territory. Watches paired with a tuxedo are typically slim, hand-winding, with three (or just two) hands, and come on a simple black leather strap. This Hublot, on the other hand, looks like a prop starship troopers. But frankly — that’s what makes Mahomes’ choice so funny, especially when paired with a traditional black-tie attire.

After all, when you’re one of the highest-paid (and most successful) quarterbacks in the NFL, you can afford to let your hair down a bit.
