Since then, the firm has made a name for itself as a leading manufacturing and tuning house that specializes in upgrading Porsche models. Now, it plans to re-invent the field that Porsche helped pioneer: the boxer engine.
RUF’s eight-cylinder boxer engine sends horsepower into the four figures
flat, or boXER, engines are one thing Porsche knows better than most companies, CBearing in mind the flat-six is its literal calling card. That said, there hasn’t been much emphasis towards getting bigger. While there are some examples of the flat-eight in automotive history – even Porsche tried this format a few times – it is very unusual to encounter a flat-eight engine.
Known internally as the “Erprober” or “Tester”, the RUF’s Boxer 8 (B8) made its debut at Goodwood, standing as a living, fire-breathing unit that challenges the limits of high-performance engineering. The twin-turbo 4.8-liter Boxer 8 is said to develop 1,000 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque (~738 pound-feet)Tea). located in an extended RUF CTR3 (a modified Porsche 911)The B8 engine serves as a teThe STBed is a proof of concept that RUF says will shape the future of its vehicles. This means that we may actually see more B8 engines in the future.
There are moments in a company’s history that define the future, for RUF, the Boxer 8 is one of those moments. The Boxer-Eight was never a part of our story, or anyone else’s for that matter, so we decided to write a new chapter in automotive history. We look forward to giving the engines the chance to have their say at Goodwood.
The CTR3, equipped with the B8 engine, will participate in Supercar Runs twice per day from Friday, July 10 to Sunday, July 12, with veteran Tanner Faust behind the wheel. The vehicle will be on display in the Supercar Paddock for attendees interested in coming and checking it out.
This automotive milestone is hiding in plain sight and testing
RUF loves to talk about its engineering, which is why the company chose the CTR3 as the B8 test shell. To the average viewer, whether or not they are familiar with the company’s activities, the CTR3 looks quite ordinary – some might even mistake it for one of Porsche’s sports cars. But it hides a revolutionary engine beneath its skin, and only those with prior knowledge of the brand and/or Porsche and a keen eye would know there was something else going on. The CTR3 has been lengthened to accommodate the larger B8 engine – by 100 millimeters to be exact. The most interesting aspect of the entire setup, however, is that all 1,000+ horses are sent through a six-speed manual transmission.
Although RUF has remained tight-lipped about the project, the team has assured us that we’ll hear the B8 in all its glory roaring through Goodwood throughout the weekend.
Livery pays tribute to the man who started it all
A special cosmetic package has been applied to the B8-powered CTR3, which recalls the “Yellowbird” that destroyed the Green Hell more than 35 years ago. With graphics that symbolize the number 8, as well as the constant motion, visually, the B8-powered CTR3 will be enough to capture the emotions of enthusiasts. And if that doesn’t work, RUF has brought a 1,000+ horsepower eight-cylinder boxer engine, which should help garner some curiosity from those lucky enough to experience it.
