Ozark Trail Low Hiker Boots, $40
Why is it a great value?
Trail-ready hiking shoes usually come with trail-ready prices, and brands like Merrell and Salomon have proven that people will pay for that name-brand prestige. Walmart’s in-house outdoor label, Ozark Trail, focuses more on delivering affordable versions of reliable (but otherwise expensive) hiking gear, including this pair of bestselling hiking boots — a Merrell Moab-inspired pair that’s only $40.
The Ozark Trail Low Hiker is a waterproof hiking shoe made of genuine suede, and it retails for $40, which puts it well below the asking price of comparable name-brand hiking boots. They have earned over 1,000 five-star ratings and come in three colors. It may be surprising to see a shoe that, at least at first glance, looks more than capable, but buyers are saying it’s the real deal.

What shoppers need to know
- Upper: suede and mesh
- Midsole: EVA with ergonomic PU foam footbed
- Outsole: rubber
- Construction: Lace-up, water resistant
- Best for: hiking, daily wear
In this hiking shoe, you get an EVA midsole and a foam footbed that is not as supportive as Merrell’s, but will still give you plenty of cushioning. That support is reinforced by the padded collar, and the low rubber outsole keeps them light enough to wear all day without losing grip.
You can’t put a trademark on just any generic shoe style, which is why it looks like Ozark Trail took inspiration from Merrell’s Moab series with this shoe, as the suede-and-mesh upper follows the same basic format used in the iconic hikers. Merrell’s Moab Low ($145 retail) is the closest to this shoe, sharing the surprisingly similar upper aesthetic (the materials are different) and the cushioned base that has kept it a trail-shoe standard for years.

what shoppers are saying
One devoted fan from Columbia wrote that the prices were getting too high, and they took a risk on Ozark Trail hikers. After wearing them for a while, he wrote, “They worked as well and wore as well as my triple priced Columbia.” Another reviewer wrote, “The Ozark Trail have been my favorite shoes for years. I’ve tried more expensive shoes, but I keep finding myself coming back to these.”
As for hiking capabilities, another shopper wrote, “These seem sturdy and durable while being waterproof. Nice tread pattern on the bottom.” They also hold up pretty well: “I’m still wearing my first pair after 3 years.”
If you want a pair of hikers that perform just as well as their more expensive counterparts, Ozark Trail’s Low Hiker Boots are absolutely worth the $40 sticker price.
