Hunter Lawrence turned the Redbud National upside down with a display of relentless determination, snatching the 450 class lead from brother Jett Lawrence in a race filled with chaos, comebacks and high drama.
On a scorching Michigan afternoon, Hunter Lawrence held off early pacesetter Jorge Prado to win the second 450 moto and take the overall victory. This momentous result means Hunter now wears the coveted red plate as the championship leader – a seismic shift that few could have predicted at the start of the day. Jett Lawrence, the defending champion and crowd favorite, suffered two costly crashes in a painful afternoon, leaving him struggling for points and losing his grip on the series lead.
Redbud Nationals is always a high-octane affair, but this year’s showdown delivered even more fireworks. The opening moto had already set the stage for drama: Hunter’s own charge hit a late-race bike shop stall, costing him the win and a second-place finish. But in Moto2, the Australian ace was untouchable. Jorge Prado, who came out of the gate with a textbook holeshot, looked set to take control of the race as Hayden Deegan moved into second after a courageous gate pick. Deegan, desperate to bounce back from a disappointing 10th place in the first race, gave chase as Hunter Lawrence systematically made his way to the lead.
By lap 3 Hunter’s attack began in earnest, overtaking Deegan and setting his sights on a nine and a half second advantage over the Prado. The gap seemed formidable, but Hunter was relentless, pulling away with each lap. By lap 8 he had reduced the lead to just two seconds; By lap 12, he made the decisive move and overtook Prado with just two minutes remaining on the clock. The pass was clinical, the statement clear: Hunter Lawrence is here to win and win big.
For Jorge Prado, second place overall was bittersweet. He edged out Jet Lawrence on the tiebreaker thanks to his better finish in the second moto, but the Spaniard’s early speed could not withstand Hunter’s late-race attack. “That was tough. I tried to hold him off, but Hunter was just on another level,” Prado admitted after the race, his frustration evident beneath his mud-stained helmet.
Meanwhile, Jett Lawrence was having a great day. The defending champion started aggressively, battling Deegan in the early corners before disaster struck – he lost the rear end and crashed, falling down the field to 10th. Any hopes of a rapid recovery were dashed almost immediately as another crash on Lap 2 dropped him to 11th. Jett came back strongly, picking up riders to return to the top five by lap 12, but could only finish third overall – a result that underlined the fine margins that Motocross has at the elite level.
“I couldn’t put it together today,” Jett said, frustration obvious. “I need to regroup and come back stronger. The championship is not over yet.”
Elsewhere in the field, RJ Hampshire delivered a quietly impressive ride, moving up to fourth on Lap 3 and holding that position until the checkered flag. Hayden Deegan, whose gamble for gate position paid off with a strong start, managed to score valuable points in Moto 2, helping him recover from his previous disappointment.
The result for Redbud has completely changed the picture of the championship. Hunter Lawrence’s rise to the top has breathed new life into the title race, setting up an exciting brother-sister rivalry as the series heads into its next showdown. Jet Lawrence, now engaged in chasing rather than giving orders, must overcome both physical and psychological injuries and find a way to re-establish his authority. Jorge Prado, always a threat, remains in striking distance, hungry for a big win on American soil.
With the red plate changing hands and the dynamic of the championship changing dramatically, all eyes will be on the next round. The question is simple: Can Hunter Lawrence keep his foot on the gas, or will the Jets roar for revenge? The battle lines have been drawn, and the stakes have never been higher.
