62 years ago today: Famous rock band releases their first No. 1 hit

Friday marks the 62nd anniversary of the release of a classic song by an iconic rock band that would soon reach No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart.

Before the Rolling Stones really took off in the mid-’60s with their hits like “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “Paint It Black,” and “Get Off of My Cloud,” the band had made a name for itself by performing cover songs of other major musicians.

His first album, rolling stonesWas released in April 1964. It included covers of Bobby Troup’s “Route 66”, Bo Diddley’s “Mona (I Need You Baby)” and Slim Harpo’s “I’m a King Bee”.

Two months after releasing their debut album, the Rolling Stones released another song which became the group’s first No. 1 hit in the United Kingdom. The song is a cover of Bobby Womack’s “It’s All Over Now”. was released in the UK On 26 June 1964.

Womack and her sister-in-law Shirley Womack wrote “It’s All Over Now” and released the song in May. Mick Jagger and company conducted a recording for their own version in Chicago, and completed it two weeks before the next release date.

Less than three weeks later, the Rolling Stones had their first hit in the UK.

Arguably the most iconic song of 1964, The Animals’ “The House of the Rising Sun”, was released seven days before the Rolling Stones’ cover of “It’s All Over Now”.

“The House of the Rising Sun” took the top spot uk singles chart For the week of July 8–14, 1964. However, “It’s All Over Now” ousted the Animals’ hit from the top spot and reached number 1 for the week of 15–21 July.

Although “A Hard Day’s Night” by the Beatles regained the top spot the following week, “It’s All Over Now” remained at the number 2 ranking for consecutive weeks.
